How to Remove or delete facebook application from your facebook

Ok, so you added all these applications to your facebook profile and now you are getting all kinds of emails and alerts that you don’t want, specially when they come directly to your email. For example, if you added the speed date application to your facebook you will get some alerts that will notify you of matches for you and other cool stuff, sounds nice right? wrong! specially when your wife or girlfriend see all the emails poping in. Anyways! How do you remove a facebook application if you don’t want to use it any more? easy,,, Here are the steps.

On the top bar of your facebook page click on Settings, a drop down will show. You need to pick Application Settings.

The next screen will show all your applications that you have installed on your facebook profile. To remove the application that you don’t want anymore click ‘X’ (notice that if you are getting alerts that you don’t want you can always click on Edit Settings and modify the configurations for the alerts, you don’t have to remove an app becuase of emails, you can stop those)

After you click the X button you will get a message that will ask you to confirm your deletion. Please note that If you remove an application, it will no longer have access to your data and will be removed from your profile, bookmarks and application page. to confirm the deletion click “Remove”

The last thing you will get is a screen confirming the removal of the application. click Okay and you are done.

Installing and using iPhoto Facebook Exporter

What a way to make exporting photos to facebook easier! If you are using a Mac OS and using iPhoto, you can download and install facebook exporter for iPhoto. Here is how you install it and use it :First like I said, you would need to have Mac operating system X 10.4 or later and iPhoto version 5 or later.

Installation Instructions:

go to http://www.developers.facebook.com/iphoto . This will land you on the application page, then click on ” Download Facebook Exporter for iPhoto.

After downloading the installer by clicking the button shown the screenshot above double click the downloaded file to extract it (unzip it)
Start the installer package by double clicking on it, this will install the application on your computer.
After your installation is done, open iPhoto. make sure you don’t have iPhoto instance already running.
Find the Facebook tab on the iPhoto export panel.

using Facebook Exporter:

You can start by selecting photos from you iPhoto Library, then click Export from the file menu, then click the Facebook tab.
Add captions and tag your friends on facebook.
After you complete adding the captions and tags click the Export button to upload the photos to your facebook account.

You are done! notice that you can review the pending photos on facebook and you can set the privacy level before you make them visible from your profile. play around to see other features , you will love it!

Facebook Phonebook

In an earlier post, I put step by step instructions for setting up facebook on your mobile phone and recieving all the facebook goodies, message alerts, SMS messages, friends statuses..etc… I got few emails after that asking about the if facebook has a phonebook. well the short answer is yes, and I did not put that in my earlier post, but this is how you find, create and organize your facebook phonebook contacts.

First, If you don’t have facebook mobile installed, click here to get to the instructions on how to set it up, if you already have it installed. Find the Facebook mobile application on the applications bar at the bottom of your screen. Click on the application.

On the main menu for the Facebook Mobile application you will find, Mobile uploads, Phonebook, and Accounts. Click on Phonebook. or you can go to http://www.facebook.com/friends/?view=phonebook directly.

The first thing you will see is the list of friends that have their phone number public and or have the the Facebook Mobile application installed. You can contact and send message alerts to those friends. for the first time you installed the facebook mobile application you might have no one in your phonebook yet.

You can see how many friends has phone numbers and then sort them by, Status updates, Recently updated, or Everyone. This screen will also allow you to add another phone number if you have more than one line.

Facebook on Mobile Phone

With facebook mobile you can interact with you facebook from your mobile phone. You can update your facebook status or look up friends profile information, you can also recieve facebook messages, wall posts, and notifications sent to your phone as text messages. Here is how you can set it up…

go to www.facebook.com/apps search for “mobile” Click on the application and that will take you to the facebook mobile application screen. on the upper right hand corner click on “Go to Application”

2. The next thing we need to do is activate the Facebook Mobile.

Add your phone number and the Carrier of your phone for example, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint etc…
Click ”Activate” to activate your mobile phone with facebook.
You will get SMS text message to your phone with the confirmation code.

3. Add the confirmation code sent to you by SMS (Text message) and click Confirm. That will activate your mobile phone with the facebook application.

After you confirm your mobile, you can check the settings for the facebook mobile application. Here are the settings that are available:

Turn on the text messages sent from facebook mobile application.
Turn Off the text messages sent from facebook mobile application.
you can pick which text goes to your phone such as Facebook Pokes, Facebook Messages, Facebook Comments, Facebook Wall posts, and Facebook friend requests.
What status updates should go to your phone. you can specify a friend name that you want to get the status on.
You can specify what times should the texts be sent to your mobile phone.
You an speficiy How many texts should be sent.
Specify if you want to get a confirmation text when you poke, message, or wall post from your phone.
Incase you have multiple phones you can specify which phone you want the text messages to go to.

After you are done click “Save Preferences” and enjoy using your facebook mobile application.

Create and Organize Facebook Groups

This facebook application allows you to create and organize your groups. You can create up to 200 groups. for example you can get sports facebook groups, family groups, shared activities, shared intrests like Art groups or music groups etc…

The facebook groups on the page shows the recently updated groups and the facebook groups that your friends has recently joined.

This is how you setup facebook top groups.

visit www.facebook.com/apps on the right hand side menu click on the applications “By Facebook” click on the application “Groups” from the applications list.
On the upper right hand side click on “Go To Application”
Click on “Allow” to allow access to the application. Note that the groups application will pull your profile information, facebook photos, your facebook friends info and other content that requires to work.

4. The application will be automatically added to your facebook, you will see three tabs in the applicaiton “My Top Groups”, “My Groups” . You can also check out some settings for the groups box. these settings are:

Bigger groups pictures - This will put 3 facebook groups per row
Hide Group names - This shows the facebook group pictures only.
Use smaller font size for group names.
Show pictures on the left colums.

Additionaly, you can add groups and remove them from you facebook. and if you want to remove the whole application you can. personally I think this is one of the most important applications, specially if you have too many facebook groups.

Protect Lost or Stolen Laptop

You have to be extra careful today. With the increased security at airports, losing track of a laptop is easier than ever. Here are six guidelines to help you avoid seeing your notebook PC disappear — or, if it does, help you find it or get a quick replacement.

In Summary these steps are:

protect your laptop while going through security checks.
Encrypt sensitive data.
Backup and copy your data periodically.
Trace a stolen laptop’s location.
Set a System password.
Consider Laptop Insurance.

Here are more details about each of the steps above.

1. Tips for getting through security checks. Oddly, some airports have collected stacks of laptops. They’re left behind by harried passengers in security areas. Most are reclaimed eventually. But some people never come back for their machines.Obviously, you’ve got to allow yourself plenty of time when you fly today. When I travel, I carry my laptop in a laptop backpack. There’s lots of room in there, and it’s inconspicuous. I see fashionable businesspeople carrying laptops in expensive cases. They’re asking for trouble. Those cases say, “Laptop! Laptop! Steal me!”Security people most likely will want to check the laptop. If possible, handle it yourself, rather than having them do it. Frankly, they’re not all sophisticated computer users.When recently traveling through the Los Angeles airport, I had to give some hints to the security experts on how to open my laptop. “Just slide the button there right on the top,” I told the perplexed guard. Don’t be afraid to speak up. You don’t need your machine damaged gratuitously.Be sure your battery is charged. The security people may well want to turn on the machine. Most important, don’t let it out of your sight. This becomes especially difficult if you are selected for a random head-to-toe check.Once on board your flight, put the computer — safely stowed in your bag — under the seat in front of you. Try to avoid putting it in the overhead bin. Others will have more access to it there.

2. Have sensitive data? Encrypt it. If you have sensitive information on your computer, consider encrypting it. Programs such as Pretty Good Privacy (www.pgp.com) make the job easy. If you have Windows XP, you already have the tools needed. While the thief has your machine, these extra steps will make it much more difficult to access the laptop’s data.Encryption will protect your business secrets, but it won’t retrieve your data. To do that, you’ve got to back up your information to another computer. If you run your own server, you can easily upload files to it.You don’t have to back up everything on the laptop. Just copy the files you will need to the server. If your laptop should be stolen on your trip, you may be able to borrow a computer at your destination and download your important files. Finding time for backups is a pain, I know. Lots of people don’t bother. But backups can save you.

3. Backup and Copy your data periodically. If you don’t have a server, or don’t want to back up to it, take a look at some digital-music players. Some today have 20-gigabyte hard drives. They are easily hooked to a laptop through the USB or FireWire ports. The data can then be copied to the digital-music player. These things can copy any data, not just music files. Stick it in your baggage.Archos (www.archos.com), for instance, makes players with hard drives that range from 6 to 20 GB and cost $200 to $350. They will connect to your computer via the USB port. Copying files to them should be fast and easy.

4. Trace a stolen laptop’s location. If your laptop does get stolen, wouldn’t it be great if the system could do the high-tech equivalent of phoning home? There are programs that will report the location of a stolen laptop. They work when the laptop connects to the Internet.Some claim to report the laptop’s exact physical location. Tracing programs include zTrace (www.ztrace.com), CyberAngel (www.sentryinc.com) and ComputracePlus (www.computrace.com).Security experts also say that engraving your name on the computer is helpful. That will make it more difficult to fence. A thief might decide to take a pass.

5. Set a system password. Every road warrior should protect their laptop with a startup password. This way, a system password prompt will appear each time you start your computer before Windows even begins to load. It will prohibit any access to the computer at all. So, this is definitely not a password you want to forget!To create a system password, you’ll need to access your computer’s setup utility (also known as CMOS BIOS settings, which stands for “complementary metal oxide semiconductor basic input/output system”). Doing this requires different actions for different computers.Typically, however, if you press Delete, Esc or F1 as soon as you turn on your system, and before it begins to load Windows, you’ll get the setup menu. If in doubt, check your computer’s manual or search online at your system manufacturer’s Web site.Once you’re into the setup utility, scroll through the options until you find a setting for “security,” or it may even be labeled “password.” Enter your desired password and make sure you press “save and exit” (usually F10, but this too varies by machine).

6. Consider laptop PC insurance.Finally, if your laptop is expensive, you might want to insure it. Some homeowners’, renters’ and business insurance policies don’t cover computers, and if they do, they may be limited in the type of coverage.But a few insurers, such as Safeware (www.safeware.com), specialize in insuring computers. You can get an online quote through Safeware or through InsuranceTraders.com, an online directory of insurance companies.Today’s laptops are ripe targets for thieves. If you follow these basic guidelines along with some good common sense, you don’t have to give yours up.

Battery Tips for Mobile Gadgets

When it comes to battery life, the first thing we think of is laptops. But What about other mobile gadgets? Like PDAs and wireless handsets? How do we make sure your batteries last as long as possible? Here are four tips.

1. Follow instructions and use them right — right from the start. “All batteries should be properly conditioned prior to first use,” says Larry O’Connor, chief executive of Other World Computing, a Woodstock, Ill., developer of battery solutions and computer enhancement products. “You must properly prepare the battery by following the first charge and use instructions.” And what if you don’t? O’Connor warns that failure to follow can shorten the life or runtime of your battery. “Follow the instructions to the letter and that battery will give you a lot more,” he says.

2. Don’t overcharge them. When it comes to batteries for small devices such as PDAs, cell phones or Tablet PCs, the single biggest mistake users make is leaving them plugged in to the charger for lengthy periods after they’ve been fully recharged. “Leaving the batteries, at least those types associated with these devices, on charge for endless periods will reduce the overall life of the battery,” warns Paul Klatt, a quality assurance engineer for Batteries Plus, a Hartland, Wis., commercial-battery distributor. He says battery chargers normally taper down when the battery is fully charged. “However, enduring weeks of even a ‘trickle charge’ creates heat buildup and will eventually cause premature battery failure,” Klatt says. How do you avoid overcharging? Remove the charger right after the battery is fully charged.

3. Use them at regular intervals. This is a problem that affects spare batteries, but it can also be a factor on a backup unit, such as a second cell phone. O’Connor says batteries have to be used in order to get the most out of them. “If you have spares, cycle them at least once every six months — or even better, every three months,” he says. “This will go a long way in keeping your batteries maintained to properly perform.”

4. Stay away from cheap-o replacements. “Quality is very important when it comes to replacement batteries,” says Stefan Betesh, vice president of product development for Sakar International, an Edison, N.J., consumer electronic products manufacturer. Many lesser-known but cheaper brands cut corners when they make their batteries. That can affect the overall life expectancy and performance of the battery. Worse, the batteries may be defective because “most low-end batteries are refurbished or just not working with quality control,” he says. His recommendation? Go with a recognized brand and buy from a reputable source.

But let’s be honest: Keeping your batteries at peak performance is a lot like taking care of an infant. Lots of “dos” and “don’ts” to remember — change this, stay away from that, follow the directions, etc.

Does anyone expect you to do all of this?

Well, not really.

I leave my cell phone charger plugged in overnight from time to time (OK, more than that) and I’ve never cycled my batteries. Is there a solution for those of us who really couldn’t be bothered?

I spoke with Bill Acker, president and CEO of MTI Micro Fuel Cells, an Albany, N.Y., battery manufacturer. He tells me that fuel cells will soon become alternatives to today’s high-maintenance lithium-ion batteries. The new technology can hold up to 10 times more of a charge than conventional batteries. “For the first time,” he says, “wireless and other electronic hand held devices will be truly wireless.”

But fuel cell technology and other innovations like it are still a few years away from being widely available. Until then, these four tips can help you stretch your power supply to the limit.

Link building, get links to your site

The advertising mode is known as “link building,” involves getting other Web sites to link to your site. There is much more to good search engine listings than simply optimizing your site for keywords.

In order to keep searchers happy, search engines are always developing ways to make their results more relevant. In the last couple of years, links have become increasingly more important to the engines because they see links as an endorsement of your site by other Web sites. Think about it for a minute: Would you link to a site you didn’t like?

This concept is referred to as “link popularity.” Based on the links pointing to your site, the search engines either increase or decrease how relevant your site is for particular keyword searches.

Obviously, you want to increase your site’s relevancy. That’s the goal here: to make sure you start building the right kind of links for your site in order to improve your search-engine results.

To this day, the best way to build links is still doing it by hand. Here are the steps you should follow when building links:

1. Set a goal. Link building takes a lot of time, but it is very effective and easy to do, so you want to keep at it. Set a goal for the number of links you want as a way to stay motivated through the process.Depending on the sites you ask and your approach, your results will vary. But a general rule of thumb is to set your linking goal at four-to-six times higher than the number of links you actually want to receive. You need to set your goal higher because most sites will not want to trade links, for various reasons.

2. Make sure your site is worth a link. This means your site must offer something of value to entice other sites to link to yours.If all your site does is sell products or services, you need to get busy creating some additional linkable content. Examples of linkable content include how-to articles, product reviews, tools, tips and so on. Creating content can be tough, but if you don’t have some on your site already, you’ve got to do it. Adding linkable content not only will encourage others to link to your site, but it will improve the overall quality of your site for your visitors.Make it easy on yourself by writing about something you know that relates to your site. This column is a perfect example. It teaches without trying to sell something. The best part of creating linkable content is that if you do it well enough, you will find that people will link to your site without you even asking, and that’s the easiest way to build links.You’re not a writer? You can always add free tools or free downloads. Also, consider creating a links page prior to requesting a link trade with a site. You can usually expect a better reception from a potential link partner if they can see where you will place the link to their site.

3. Determine the type of sites you want to trade links with. This takes some thought. You need to figure out all of the different types of sites that could potentially trade links with you. Focus on sites that are related to your target market.Here’s a good example:I worked on a site that sold sunglasses, so I approached sites that sold swimsuits and tanning lotions, but not sunglasses. Once we accumulated links from those sites, we then developed a section of our site on eye protection and asked for links from all of the sites we could find that addressed eye protection. In the end, we significantly increased the number of links to our site from other sites in our target market. Plus, we added about 10 additional pages of content to our site that our visitors enjoyed and we continue to link to. This helps significantly in search-engine placements.

4. Get equipped to evaluate your link partners. To make the most of your efforts, you don’t want to spend too much time going after links from sites that the search engines don’t think are valuable. While it isn’t perfect, the Google Toolbar can help you decide which sites are quality link partners and which aren’t. The toolbar integrates with your Web browser. It helps you by displaying the “page rank” of each site you visit. Put simply, page rank is a rough indicator of what Google thinks of a site. You can rest assured that if Google thinks it is a good site, it probably is. The higher a page ranks the better. One strategy is to try to link up with sites that have pages ranked as high as or higher than your own.

5. Locate quality link partners. There are many ways to find link partners, but the easiest way to find quality link partners quickly is to start at Open Directory and Yahoo!. Open Directory and Yahoo! are good places to start for three reasons:These directories are both so difficult to get listed in that each potential link partner you find there is likely to be of a higher quality than those you would find elsewhere.Yahoo! and Open Directory greatly boost a site’s link popularity when they list a site. Your site will receive a little bit of that boost each time someone from one of those directories links to you.The links you build don’t help your link popularity in the search engines unless the engines know about the link. The search engines crawl the sites listed in Yahoo! and Open Directory on a regular basis, so by starting your linking campaign here you can be sure the search engines will find you new links quickly.To find partners, simply start searching for terms that are related to the types of link partners you decided are best (step No. 3 above). While surfing your potential partner’s Web site, keep your eye on their page rank (step No. 4).

6. Organize your findings. Again, there are many ways to do this, but it’s always a good idea to keep it simple. Use a spreadsheet to keep track of the following:For many sites, much of this information will not be available, but you should try to find as much of it as you can.

7. Prepare for contact. Now that you have a list of potential link partners, go through the list and send a custom e-mail to each one requesting that you trade links. Do not send a generic e-mail requesting a link; it will not get a response. Your link request should mention the following, most of which comes from your spreadsheet (step No. 4):

8. Check for links. When building links, you are dealing with real people, so it can take some time. You may need to wait a month or longer before checking to see if anyone has linked to your site from your new partner. Usually it is best to do this step by hand, but you can use a link popularity tool if you have a lot to check.

9. Follow up with the cream of the crop. Once a month has passed, follow up with each site that hasn’t linked to you yet. Save time and only follow up with the cream of the crop — those in your spreadsheet with the highest page ranks.

10. Set a schedule. You will find it easier to keep building links if you put yourself on some sort of link-building schedule. Consider doing a certain small amount (30 to 60 minutes) of link building each day. It will help prevent burnout, which is inevitable if you try to do your entire campaign in a couple of days.

Internet Explorer 8 Instant Search

Now you can type a search term and see real-time, relevant search suggestions from your chosen search provider and your browsing history. Click on a suggestion at any time to immediately execute the search without having to type the entire word or phrase.

Visual search

Internet Explorer 8 is partnering with top search providers like Live Search, Wikipedia, Yahoo!, Amazon, and more to deliver direct results and “visual search” images that provide you with immediate answers. For example, typing “Seattle weather” with Live Search will instantly show you a preview of the current weather directly in the Search Box drop-down. Look for more visual search results with your preferred search providers.

More improvements

Because people often use search to get back to sites that they’ve visited before, Internet Explorer 8 includes matches from your History in the bottom part of the Search Box drop-down.

An integrated “Find On Page” button also has been added to the instant search box, enabling you to search for text on the current webpage. Also, you can change the width of the Instant Search Box by dragging its left edge, making it easier to see long search strings as they are typed.

You can easily delete, disable, or enable Search Providers by clicking on Manage Search Providers from the drop-down arrow in the Search box or Manage Add-ons from the Tools button on the upper right-hand corner of the browser window.

Enhanced Tabbed Browsing

It can be difficult to keep track of many tabs at once. Internet Explorer 8 introduces Tab Groups, which make tabbed browsing easier. When one tab is opened from another, the new tab is placed next to the originating tab and color coded, so that you can quickly discern which tabs have related content. If you close a tab that’s part of a group, another tab from the same group is displayed, enabling you to remain within the context of the current task rather than suddenly looking at an unrelated site.

By right-clicking on any tab, you can close the tab, close the tab group, or remove the tab from a group. From the same menu, you can refresh one or all tabs, open a new tab, reopen the last tab closed, or see a list of all recently closed tabs and reopen any or all of them.

Better Find On Page

Internet Explorer 8 includes a completely redesigned Find On Page toolbar, which is activated by pressing Ctrl-F or choosing Find On Page from the Edit menu or Search box drop-down. Press the Alt key if you do not see the Edit menu option.

The toolbar is integrated below the tab row, so that it does not obscure any content on the page. Instead of waiting for you to type an entire search term and hit Enter, the toolbar searches character-by-character as you type. Matches are highlighted in yellow on the page so that they’re easy to identify.

Smarter Address Bar

The Address Bar in Internet Explorer 8 makes navigation easier than ever, becoming a highly useful search tool that enables you to just type a few characters and then go directly to the desired site. It searches across your History, Favorites, and RSS Feeds, displaying matches from the website title or any part of the URL. As you type, matched characters are highlighted in blue so you can identify them at a glance. In addition, you can delete any address in the drop-down box by clicking on the red X. This is especially useful for getting rid of misspelled URLs.

Redesigned New Tab page

The New Tab page loads quickly and provided links make it easier to get started on your next browsing activity:

Use an Accelerator: Now you can use an Accelerator using any text you have copied to the clipboard.

Start InPrivate Browsing: Two things happen when you start inPrivate Browsing: your browsing activities, history and cookies are not retained, and third party web content providers may be blocked from tracking your online activities without your consent.

Reopen closed tabs: Reopen a tab that you’ve closed in your current browsing session, which can be helpful when a tab is accidentally or prematurely closed.

Reopen your last browsing session: Reopen all tabs that were open when Internet Explorer 8 was last closed, which can be useful if you accidentally close the browser.

Improved Zoom

Adaptive Page Zoom improves upon traditional zoom-in/zoom-out functionality in the browser by intelligently relaying out the page content and eliminating the need to scroll left and right. This will improve your ability to magnify pages with small fonts and be able to read more on the web.

A better back button

When using rich applications such as mapping on the Internet, you may be taken to the beginning of the application instead of the previous page when you hit the back button. Now when you hit the back button, more pages will behave the way you expect.
