Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor

Follow these step by step instructions to determine if you can upgrade to windows vista. the steps describe using Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor.   following these steps will give you a good idea if you system can handle the new vista operating system before you buy the software.    Make sure you follow these steps carefully. 

1- Visit Microsoft downloads website at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads  –> click on Windows –> from the list find windows vista upgrade advisor.

2- Click on the download button.

3- On the download window click  run  (this will run the program from it’s current location)

4- Click Next

5- Click I Agree then Click Next

 6- Click Next

7- Click Creat Desktop Shortcut then Click Next

8- Wait till the windows vista upgrade advisor installs on your computer

9- Check the Launch Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor box then click Close

10- When the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Launches you will see the screen below. Now the Upgrade advisor is ready to scan your computer and give you a series of information that will help you decide weather to upgrade or not and what flavor of windows vista you can upgrade to.  Click on  Start Scan

11- Wait while Widnows Vista Advisor Scans your computer. while this is going on you can take a look on the screen and see which windows edition is good for you.  Note that there are four flavors of windows vista, 1)Vista Home Basic 2) Vista Business 3)Vista Home Premium, 4) Vista Ultimate.  You will get the most features out of the ultimate version.

12 - When the scan is complete, you will get the screen below indicating so.   Click See Details to review the results of the scan.

13- At this point you will find out weather your computer can support windows vista or not, either way you will get the details along with suggested solutions.  This example shows that my computer can run windows vista, but what about the programs on your computer are they supported by vista?  read along to find out ….

14- Take a look at the screenshot below.  Windows Vista Upgrade advisor generates three results (reports)

  • Sytem Requirments : these details will tell you if there are any known system issues that prevent you from upgrading to Windows Vista. you can click See Details to see if there are any issues. Normally,  if there are any issues in the section, you won’t be able to upgrade to windows vista till you resolve these issues, which will propably be upgrading some of the components on your computer, like memory or hardrive space.
  • Devices : these details will tell you if there are any devices on your computer (video card, sound card…etc..) that are not supported by windows vista. Normally these results don’t prevent you from upgrading to windows vista if you find the corret device drivers for your devices. You can get those device drivers from Microsoft Website or the device manufacturer website.
  • Programs :these details will tell you if there are any programs on your computer that are not supported or will not run properly with windows vista.

15- In this example you I clicked on Programs to see if there are any issues with the programs that are installed on my machine, in the Action Required Section, you can see the what is suggested to do for that program.  You can also click on Task List tab to see a list of actions that you need to do to your computer in order to upgrade to windows Vista.  GOOD LUCK !

  1. The final report shows that almost all my programs are compatable with windows vista, should I remove the programs that are not? or would the vendor give me an upgrade?
